Help! I need a new spangly phone!

I'm very fond of my 6 year old SE P800. It has a touch screen with virtual QWERTY keyboard and I am using Opera Mini 3 Basic for web browsing.

What I would like to upgrade to is a similar sort of phone, that I can install Opera Mini 4.2 (MIDP2) on to get JavaScript support.

An iPhone isn't going to cut it, as basically I want to be able to browse the full versions of sites like Facebook while on the move, and not get automatically rerouted to a cut down mobile version with no apps.

My phone of choice would be the SE X1 (which has Opera 9.5 installed as standard), but I strongly suspect I would get the same problem as with the iPhone. Needless to say no-one in the Vodafone shop has the faintest idea what I am on about.

Any ideas?

Boda died :(

Our much loved old marmalade cat Boda died yesterday. Not a shock as he had been unwell for a while - he was on painkillers for his arthritis and had been diagnosed with a stomach growth and was awaiting surgery to investigate/remove it. (The vet wanted him to build up a bit of strength first and since starting the painkillers he had perked up quite a lot and started eating again).

I went downstairs in the morning and found him in the garage obviously in a bad way. Normally a fastidious cat, he had soiled himself and vomited everywhere. When I stroked him he wailed and keeled over on his side with his head in the vomit. We decided that he needed to make that last trip to the vet as he was plainly in pain. I sat with him, talking to him and stroking him, until the vet opened, then we moved him to a box lined with a sheet. He wailed when we moved him. mrnazz and our son said goodbye to him and I loaded him into the car. He died on the way to the vet.We are all very sad.
Even more about 4 year olds and awkward questions

4 year olds and awkward questions again

Why are the most awkward questions (and by most awkward I mean most requiring a long explanation or discussion for the answer to be a useful one) always asked first thing in the morning, before I have had my coffee? In the last couple of days we've had "What happens to people when they die?" and "What happens inside the sun?".

Daleks stink, apparently

Or rather, my 4 year old son asked me "If a Dalek stinked, what would happen to it?"

Then I realised he meant extinct. I know where he got that word from - the project of the month at nursery is dinosaurs. But where did he get the idea that Daleks might be facing extinction? He's not allowed to watch Doctor Who.

For the last 2 years of going to Body Pump classes I have had the goal (impossible seeming at first) of being able to perform the squats section with 10kg of weights on each end of the bar. Today I made that final step up from 9.5kg to 10kg. It was fine. The worst bit, as always, was lifting the bar back over my head at the end.

Now I just have to keep it up....

That's a roller coaster, yesterday, at Legoland with my son - his first time. He thoroughtly enjoyed it and wanted to go on again, right at the front this time. I normally don't enjoy roller coasters but found that a ride designed for 4-8 year olds provided just the right amount of excitement.

I guess that means you're probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.

I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most.
Meme...

Comment with the words "Top Ten" or "Top Five", and I will reply with a subject for which you will generate a top ten (or top five) list. Post the list and instructions in your own journal...

maviscruet asked me...

Top 5 reasons NEVER to have children

1) You will never have to feign interest in My Little Pony (although hey, as the parent of a boy I get to avoid this too).
2) You will not have to suffer the inconvenience and humiliation of having a three-year-old jump on your back while you have your head stuck down the toilet after a particularly merry New Year's Eve.
3) You will not have to get up at 7 sharp and play complex games with toy cars after being up most of the night partying.
4) You will not have the back of your car so splattered with milk that it looks like an explosion in a whitewash factory.
5) You will still have some money.

First party in the new house

We have had a few people round to supper since moving in, but Saturday was the first gathering of any size. There were sixteen of us for dinner (to celebrate mrnazz 's birthday) and we had six guests staying overnight. We commandeered the playroom and set up two tables in there, six on one and ten on the other. A bit of a squeeze but it worked very well. It meant we could have drinks in the living room first, and use the dining part of the kitchen (which would seat 10 max) as a staging area. I found it much easier than in the old house where everything was open plan (and smaller). It'll be easier still in the summer as we'll be able to put up our marquee and eat on the patio. Then we won't have to move all the tables before going to bed, which we did this time, firstly because the young master would not have been amused in the morning to find his playroom full of dining tables, and secondly because the house was so full of overnight guests that we were sleeping in there.

After the cheese and port everyone was more than a little merry and it was then that someone spotted the hats from my son's dressing up box, so we all had to try them on. The Thunderbirds helmet probably saved me from having a hangover as it was quite hard to drink while wearing it.

It's definitely a good house for parties!

I am officially an old fart as far as music goes

Surprised about the 90s Alternative given that I basically lost interest in music around 1994 - suffered burnout after working in a record shop for years.

Your Taste in Music:

80's Alternative: Highest Influence
80's Pop: Highest Influence
Classic Rock: Highest Influence
90's Alternative: High Influence
80's Rock: Medium Influence

How's Your Taste in Music?

I have less patience than a 3 year old

We haven't had a proper family day out since the move, so today we took Little Nazz to the Science Museum. After several hours we decided it was time to go home (although he would really have liked to go back into the computer games exhibit) and started back to the car. As we passed the Natural History Museum a little voice piped up "Dinosaurs".

Sunday afternoon has to be one of the worst possible times to see dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum, but dinosaurs are this month's project at nursery and he was very keen, so in we went and joined the queue. The exhibition had obviously reached the fire limit and we were being let in a few at a time. Then we had to queue all the way along the catwalk inside to see the T Rex, my son as cool as a cucumber and me biting my tongue and trying not to climb the walls.

The T Rex roared a lot and our boy roared back at it and we all laughed. A great day out in the end!

We've finally got all our stuff out of store

That is, the furniture that has been in storage since my mother died a few years ago, and all the books, CDs and general clutter that we put into store while trying to sell our old house.

The garage, having been emptied of boxes once since we moved in, is now mostly full again and won't be so easy to clear this time as a lot of the stuff which at the time we weren't sure whether we were going to need again (baby clothes and so forth) needs to go on Ebay. Luckily I DO have time to deal with it all as I'm in the window where my son is at nursery enough to give me some extra time, but not enough to make it worth looking for a part time job (that'll happen in 2008 when he goes to school).
